kevin m asked:
i own a 2002 ford ranger 4×4 and it wont engage when i turn the switch. both of the fuses appear to be ok, but it won’t go into four high or four low.

I would check the relay under the hood and then the plug in to the T-case then the vacuum pod that ingauges you hubs.

You probably have a bad 4wheel acutator, slide over your truck and just look to make sure all your wires are hooked first

when you try to engage the 4whl does the 4×4 indicator flash, this indicates a problem with the system, if no lites flash then have someone try to engage the 4×4 system while you smack the motor on the transfer case with a small hammer, this motor is subject to the elements and lack of use cause it to not work a smack with a hammer will sometimes jar it loose, if the 4×4 engages now the best thing you can do for it is use it more, driving straight down a dry road engage the 4×4, it wont hurt it any and of course disengage it before you turn, thats the biggest problem with these systems is a lack of use

Had the same prob with my 92 Ranger 4wd. Its more than likely the actuator motor is bad or stuck. I found a web site that is super helpfull with Rangers called rangerstation.com Check it out..they have step by step on how to clean the motor and test it. I cleaned mine and still didnt work. Bought a used one from my local salvage yard for $100 and is still working great 3 years later in these great Wisconsin winters!!
