Oil Indicator in 2001 Ford Lariet Supercrew Cab with 5.4 Liter Engine 4/4?

In cold weather the oil indicator goes up an then down and then when the truck warms up the needle goes down to the normal position. The oil level is fine, but I do smell oil under the hood. I think it migth be the oil sending unit. What do you think?
