Ford Truck Part

I have been looking for a Ford Ranger for a while and I was wondering if it would be better for me to have an automatic transmission or manual transmission?
I am planning on towing a small trailer and hauling some stuff so it would be like my work truck but also my daily driver
I know how to drive a manual transmission and would like one but I don’t know which transmission would be better for what i want to do
and the Ranger will be a 1999-2003

I have a 1987 ford ranger with a manual transmission and i cant figure out where to check it at. It doesnt have the black tube like a automatic transmission has to check or add. Any info would help!
